The first Europeans that landed on Connecticut shores were Dutch traders and a man named Adriaen Block. He sailed up the Connecticut river. They landed in 1614 and by 1633, they purchased land from the Pequot Tribe and made a permanent settlement. They landed near Hartford. An island was named after Adriaen Block, it is called Block island.
In 1636 Thomas Hooker, an English settler, arrived from Massachusetts to settle Connecticut. They traded for land with the Native Americans. In 1637 the Pequots chef was killed by the settlers and thats how King Philip's war started between the Pequots and the English settlers.
